The newly-announced Compaq AirLife 100 will be HP's first smartbook -- a device that is going to have a clamshell shape with a keyboard and large, high-resolution display like a netbook, but run Google's Android operating system and include a touchscreen like a smartphone.

Smartbooks are an emerging class of mobile computers, created in an attempt to find a "sweet spot" between the power of a laptop and the convenience of a phone.

The AirLife 100 will have the size and shape of a laptop, including a 10.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1,024 by 600 pixels.

It will have a  QWERTY keyboard  that's 92% the size of a standard one and a trackpad.

Compared to a laptop or even a netbook, this device will be light on ports: it will not be able to act as a USB host, and will sport just a single SD memory card slot.

It's a Smartphone
The AirLife 100 will run the Android OS on a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, and have 16 MB of internal storage.

It will include 3G cellular-wireless networking and Wi-Fib/g.

HP says this model is going to offer 12 hours of battery life, or 10 days of standby time.

Pricing & Availability
Although HP has officially unveiled the Compaq AirLife 100, it has not yet said when this smartbook will be released. It recent received FCC approval to offer this device in the U.S., so the debut could come at any time.

Also unknown is what it will cost, but one of the points of creating this class of devices was to make a laptop-like computer that can sell for even less than netbooks do.
